Play Wicked Tales: Dark Red Slot Machine For Free
A lot of popular fairytales that we know and love today were penned by the Grimm brothers, who roamed countryside of Europe, writing down folk tales in an effort to preserve them long into the future. And while these stories were usually a lot more gruesome than the more toned down versions that we ended up hearing as kids, we’re not sure Wicked Tales: Dark Red is quite the darker approach to fairytales like the source material might lead you to believe.
This is a Microgaming release in which part of the reels will be constantly expanded, and a lucky wheel will lead you to cash prizes, a free spins bonus, and a point-and-click feature.
This slot uses the familiar J, Q, K and A playing card icons, as well as unique symbols like candles, a coin purse, a locket, hungry wolves, the hunter, and a grown up Little Red Riding Hood – with the only thing little on her being her tiny clothes compared to the rest of her body. The slot’s logo acts as a Wild, while full moons are the Scatter.
Developer
When it comes to video slots, very few people can go head to head with Microgaming and manage to compete. The company has been around since 1994 with their first releases of online casinos, but their real rise to prominence came around 2002 when the company launched its Viper software, and two years later, their first mobile video slot, a mean feat for its time!
Microgaming is also happy to boast that they provided the largest progressive jackpot payout in an online slot machine, which they can prove if you check any Guinness World Records book made after 2015. While they have a lot of games from many parts of gambling, video slots amount to about half of all their releases, if not more. The company also snagged the title of best iGaming Software Supplier for 2018 at the International Gaming Awards.

How to Play it
The game makes use of wandering reels, which enlarges one part of the playing field at all times, occasionally shifting around. At all times, you’re playing with five reels and 25 fixed paylines – however, at times, one part of the reels will have four rows instead of three. With 25 fixed paylines, the only thing you can change is your wager, which can be adjusted anywhere between $0.25 up to $200 per spin, giving a really wide range that should appease casual gamblers, while leaving ample opportunity for high rollers to really go ham on this game.
Microgaming has left an Autoplay option, though it’s rather barebones, only allowing you to choose how many spins you want to go through, with no other options like loss limits. The mobile version is quite similar, except its minimalistic user interface is pushed to the right side of the screen.
We quite like the way the backdrop is drawn. The idyllic cottage has smoke slowly rising from it, and part of the image is coated in the sun’s golden gleam as it slowly starts to set – on a cut down tree stump, you even see the initials of our wicked protagonist. And yet, once past the first bit of the forest, it becomes dark and foreboding, and thanks to carefully placed ambient noises that make it sound like something’s moving in the grass and bushes, it keeps you on your toes.
Special Features
The first bonus are the wandering reels, which we explained already. On top of that, collecting three Scatters rewards which spawns the Wolf’s Wheel. The wheel will reward cash prizes until it lands on one of the two bonuses, though the cash rewards cap at 20x the bet. The first bonus is the Forest of Fortunes, in which you pick through various backpacks, which can contain cash prizes, an axe, or a wolf. Cash prizes are self explanatory, while the axe gives you protection – which is used up when you encounter a wolf. If you haven’t pulled an axe before the wolf appears, the feature ends early.
Finally, you can also be rewarded with nine free spins, with all high level symbols replaced with just one, increasing your chances for big wins.
Maximum Payouts
The maximum jackpot you can win for Wicked Tales: Dark Red is 5000x the wager. While we weren’t able to pin the title’s volatility down, or find information on it, we would put it at medium variance after thoroughly playing it. Finally, the game has an RTP of 96.1%, above average for video slots.
Summary
While Microgaming’s releases can sometimes be hit and miss, this one is most certainly a hit. We quite enjoyed the gameplay of this title. The awesome jackpot, the fun features and cool visuals all come together to make something great.
