Responsible UK Casino Gambling
People and Casino Gambling
For many, gambling is considered to be a means of entertainment when enjoyed responsibly. In fact, many british gamblers enjoy the occasional gambling entertainment, whether it is the races, playing casino slots, going out to the casino or even buying a lottery ticket.
It was estimated that over 70% of the British population partake in various forms of gambling, and have contributed over $19 billion in 2008-09, out of which $12 billion was spent just on playing slot machines.
So, some may wonder while looking at these figures…
Is Gambling a Problem?
Although gambling is seen as a form of entertainment by many, it can still bring some significant form of harm. In fact, up to 500,000 Brits are becoming or have become problem gamblers with an estimated social cost of £4.7 billion a year.
It has been noticed that the actions of one problem gambler affects the lives of about 5-10 other people. This means that there are over 5 million Brits a year which include family, friends and even employers who are affected by those with a gambling problem.
Out of those with a gambling problem, only 15% of gambling addicts seek help for their addiction.
So what is it about gambling that causes so many to become addicts?
Gambler and Poker Machines
It’s a fact that one in six people that take part in slot machines have a serious gambling problem. These addicts actually lose around $21,000 a year, which is 1/3 of an average British salary. There are even some poker machines that involve extreme gambling measures, where a player/gambler can end up losing $1,500 an hour.
According to a review by the Australian Gambling Research in 2008, the age group of 18-24 were people that spent the most on poker machines and many adult gamblers have said that they developed their gambling problems during their teen years. And, it has been noted that ¾ of gamblers have accused poker machines for being the source of their gambling problems. What’s even more astounding is that the majority of gamblers that have problems with poker machines are women.
In actuality, 9 out of 10 cases that were recorded indicated that poker machines were a source of women’s problems as well.
So, what effect does it have on the rest? Let’s look at…
The Impact of Gambling Problems
According to the report by Thomas S. and Jackson of the “Risk and Protective Factors: Depression and co-morbidities in problem gambling,” those who are gambling addicts are 6 times more prone to being divorced as compared to non gamblers. In fact, they are 4 times more likely to become alcoholics as well as heavy smokers.
In reference to The Problem Gambling Treatment and Research Centre, children with parents who are gambling addicts are 10 times more likely to develop a gambling problem of their own, as compared to children with parents who aren’t gamblers.
